us stars shine in japan

Forget the rising stock market or fifth straight year of economic growth. The latest sign of Japan Inc.'s comeback is Cameron Diaz in a slinky black dress gabbing on a phone and strutting to the tune of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" on Japanese television. But this is no film trailer or wacky guest appearance -- it's a 30-second commercial for a cellular telephone company.

And Diaz is hardly alone. As the decade-long recession drifts into memory here, the "Only in Japan" celebrity commercial is enjoying a sudden comeback -- with Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Scarlett Johansson and Kiefer Sutherland among the American stars coming back down to earth in Japan to peddle everything from dairy products to power bars.

Long a guilty financial pleasure of the Hollywood A-list -- and one that is increasingly difficult to keep under wraps in the Internet age -- the so-called "OIJ" ad emerged and bloomed during the 1970s and '80s. Named because of strict deals forbidding distribution or publicity outside Japan, such ads offered a chance for megastars to blatantly cash in on their fame while maintaining loftier images at home, where top-grossing movie actors might deign to pitch high-end perfume or elite watches, but rarely food or whiskey.

Not so in Japan, where Sylvester Stallone in his highflying Rambo period made a real killing pitching packaged ham in the 1980s. In the same era, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the "Terminator" star and future California governor, flogged Cup o' Noodles to on-the-go Japanese even as he was taking off at the box office back home.

That changed after Japan's economic bubble burst in the early 1990s, leaving Japanese companies unable or unwilling to shell out for Tinseltown's highest earners. Best illustrated by Bill Murray in 2003's Oscar-winning film "Lost in Translation" -- he played an aging actor whose top offer came from a Japanese whiskey maker -- the Only in Japan ads of the '90s were mere shadows of their predecessors.

A big name would appear every now and then -- Madonna did a shochu liquor commercial in 1995. But the Japanese ad scene became mostly dominated by cheaper Hollywood B-listers and domestic celebrities. In the early 2000s, an out-of-the-spotlight Sharon Stone showed up on Tokyo tubes plugging jewelry. Liv Tyler, one of the elves from the "Lord of the Rings" movies, could be seen lovingly inhaling the rich aroma of a local brand of coffee.

But as this nation revels in its longest period of economic growth since World War II ended, Japanese companies are dusting the cobwebs off their advertising budgets and hiring the big guns again. It's opening the door for a whole new generation of top Hollywood celebrities to moonlight for extra millions.

Last year, Japanese companies spent an estimated $52 billion on domestic ad campaigns -- the second-highest figure of the postwar era, according to Dentsu Inc., Japan's largest advertising firm.

"The companies' revenues have recovered, and they're hiring the big stars again," said Hideo Shinada, columnist for Nikkei Entertainment, a monthly industry magazine. "These are commercials they would never do in the United States because they're eager to protect their images there. But Japan is different and very far away."

In the Internet age, however, it has become harder and harder for stars to keep their Japanese forays quiet. Vigilant users of YouTube, for instance, have begun posting Pitt's and Diaz's cellphone commercials for anyone with a modem to see.

Some Japanese companies have had to scramble to fulfill their contractual agreements with stars to confine the spots to Japan by requesting the removal of ads posted on the Internet without permission. But often, the ads are quickly re-posted by other users.

"Japanese companies are going to have to keep playing a futile game of cat-and-mouse to keep these commercials private," said Hideto Takada, a copyright specialist at the Japan Advertisers Association.

Diaz and Pitt began plugging Tokyo-based telecommunications giant SoftBank Mobile Corp. in October, after the company splurged on the duo to promote its entrance into Japan's cellphone market.

In one of Diaz's three saucy spots, all of which were filmed in Los Angeles, she saunters down a Latin-flavored street with a thin cellphone tucked into the back of her tight jeans. Pitt, whose spots were filmed on location in India, does a walk-and-talk turn while appearing to be nervously avoiding someone (perhaps his American fans?).

Like most companies hiring Hollywood's top talent, SoftBank declined to comment because its agreements forbid it to discuss the stars' Japan ad spots with U.S. news media. But industry sources suggested the pair were paid more than $1.7 million each, a figure some analysts have called the highest amount ever for a Japanese commercial.

Many other firms are launching their priciest ad campaigns in years.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., makers of health supplements and power bars, traded up, replacing their former spokesperson, a Japanese actress, with Kiefer Sutherland. They also hired the full team of set, makeup and costume artists from the American actor's hit show, "24," which is extremely popular in Japan. The result is a spot that looks and feels like an episode from the show, but with Sutherland gripping a CalorieMate power bar. It was Otsuka's most expensive ad since hiring the Rolling Stones in 1989, said Yuki Kudo, the company's advertising manager.

Japanese companies insist that investing in top stars results in big dividends. Cosmetics giant Shiseido Co. hired Jolie for a series of commercials for a line of lipsticks. Shoichiro Terashi, a Shiseido marketing specialist, said the Jolie campaign marked the first time the company has hired a high-priced Hollywood celebrity for one of its spots. But since the ads began running last year, sales of the new line have bested even its highest projections.

"Our surveys showed that people in Japan think that Angelina Jolie has the most beautiful mouth in the world," Terashi said. "For a company selling lipstick, that's worth a great deal."

i am still 25. or am i?

det här skulle kunna vara taget direkt ut carrie bradshaws kolumn, but she's a slut and i'm not. doh.

diesel blev iaf glad att se mig igen. jag hade då varit borta i 30 minuter.

Three years after entering prison for robbery as a 19-year-old heroin addict, Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal) begins her first day of freedom, clean and sober. A model prisoner who has undergone personal transformation, she immediately sets out to regain custody of her young daughter Alexis (Ryan Simpkins), who has been cared for in her absence by her brother Bobby (Brad William Henke) and his wife Lynn (Bridget Barkan).

Unprepared for the demands of the world she’s stepped back into, Sherry’s hopes of staying clean, getting a job, and becoming a responsible mother are challenged by the realities of unemployment, halfway houses, and parole restrictions. Bobby and Lynn’s concerns about Sherry’s ability to care for Alexis, and her inability to prove them wrong, threaten to destroy the already delicate relationship she has with her daughter, as well as her newfound sobriety.
Disillusioned and haunted by wounds from her childhood, Sherry is eventually confronted with life-altering questions about her own survival and what it means to be a good mother. Ultimately she learns that as the harsh realities of life often get in the way of her best intentions, sometimes it’s best to take life one small step at a time.

mission impossible

children of men

såg en ny film i kväll... doh... children of men, regisserad av alfonso cuarón, starring clive owen, julianne moore, michael caine och den alltid lika duktiga chiwetel ejiofor (klicka på länken for more info on that dude). the new face of lancome sure is a fine actor. kolla in den ifall den dyker upp på en cinematograf nära dig (or download it). filmen är riktigt united kingdom-independent men väl värd en oscar for whatever.

plot as follows: the world's youngest citizen has just died at 18, and humankind is facing the likelihood of its own extinction. set in and around a dystopian london fractious with violence and warring nationalistic sects, children of men follows the unexpected discovery of a lone pregnant woman and the desperate journey to deliver her to safety and restore faith for a future beyond those presently on earth.

"Hennes jeans-märke säljer mycket bra i USA. Nu planerar hon en storskalig satsning".

Beckham has soccer academies in London and Los Angeles. His wife Victoria, a former Spice Girl, was recently photographed househunting in Los Angeles.

"David Beckham will have a greater impact on soccer in America than any athlete has ever had on a sport globally," said Timothy J. Leiweke, president & CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Galaxy. "David is truly the only individual that can build the bridge between soccer in America and the rest of the world."

His marketability was emphasized by the hit movie "Bend It Like Beckham," even as his skills deteriorated with age.

Beckham's contract included a clause in which half his image rights would go to Real Madrid. That helped earn the club millions, allowing the Spanish team to overtake Manchester United as the biggest earner in world soccer.

sports illustrated skriver en krönika om vad beckhams ankomst kommer betyda för fotbollen i usa. interesting read:

Mark it down: Jan. 11, 2007 will forever be known as the day that Major League Soccer truly arrived on the world stage.

David Beckham, the world's most recognizable soccer star, is leaving Real Madrid to join MLS' Los Angeles Galaxy in August on a five-year contract. And he's doing it the age of 31, it should be noted, not at, say, 35, when the world would simply scoff at a washed-up European star coming Stateside for a vacation and an easy paycheck.

Beckham's signing isn't necessarily a surprise. I wrote back in October that a team in MLS -- most likely the Galaxy -- needed to make it happen sooner rather than later. Here's what Beckham's arrival means:

• MLS just got noticed in the domestic and international realm. Beckham's signing isn't exactly the same thing as the Cosmos's signing of Pelé in the 1970s, but it's awfully close to it. Pelé was the greatest player the game had ever seen, while Becks has never been considered the planet's best player. But Beckham is a much better player than some of his critics are willing to admit --while he has lost a bit of pace, he was still effective at last year's World Cup and remains one of the world's best free kick-takers. And let's be honest: the marketing opportunities here are enormous. Expect to see Galaxy jerseys with Beckham's name in every corner of the world.

• From a domestic perspective, landing Beckham gives MLS a credibility that it has never had with the American sports fan, who demands to see the world's biggest stars in the sports it cares about. Beckham is a great match for L.A., where Galaxy games will become A-list events with the celebrity sightings you usually associate with Lakers games.

• Beckham may not be the only star coming to MLS. Now that Beckham has decided to make the move, his stamp of approval for the league will make it much easier for other international stars to come on board. MLS's newly installed designated-player rule -- the so-called Beckham rule -- allows each team to pay an unlimited salary to one player. DP slots are tradeable, and the New York Red Bulls now have two of them. In other words, look for Bruce Arena's Red Bulls (and perhaps a few others) to create some major buzz of their own with a big-name signing or two: Ronaldo, the all-time leading goal scorer in World Cup history and Beckham's current teammate at Real Madrid, has long been rumored as a target.

• Will Beckham's signing make the soccer that much better around the league? Not on its own. He's only one player, after all, and MLS needs to continue making strides when it comes to youth development. But from a soccer perspective Beckham will be a useful player in the midfield of the Galaxy, which frankly needs the help after missing the playoffs for the first time in league history last season. The image of Beckham sending crosses onto the head of Landon Donovan for goals is the sort of thing that will be replayed on televisions around the world.

• Are there any possible downsides to bringing Beckham on board? Sure. Overspending on international stars is what eventually doomed the old NASL, and there's no going back for MLS after this move. At the same time, though, there appear to be more rules in place--not least the league's single-entity structure--which should prevent wild bidding wars between teams. As for other risks, is it possible that Becks could be a bust on the field here? I guess, but it's not likely. The league has a long ways to go, but it's still good enough that he won't be able to coast here. Besides, I also think that Beckham's pride will keep him from loafing. If I know him well enough, I think he'll try to show people in Madrid and in England that he's still worth something on the field.

Whatever happens, today is a red-letter day for soccer in America, for MLS and specifically for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
